It is extremely rare for palate expanders to cause any discomfort, as we are simply ‘stretching the palate’ which induces new bone to form, resulting in a wider smile and more space for the permanent teeth to properly erupt, thus avoiding the unnecessary need for extraction of permanent teeth. Typically, we ask our patients to turn the activation screw only once every second night over an extended period of two months. Please remember, each turn only results in ¼ of a millimetre of expansion, thus it is a slow and gradual process eliminating the risk of discomfort. The end result is absolutely amazing, with production of a broad and beautiful smile - we guarantee that you will be in awe with your results!
A space may form between the upper front teeth during the process of expanding the palate, this is a good thing! – as this much needed space will be used by the teeth still coming in and will eventually close after they erupt.
Remember, it is normal to feel some minor pressure during the process of expansion, which may be mistaken for pain in anxious patients during the first couple turns, but this quickly dissipates as the patient realizes that there is nothing to worry about.
If you experience any significant discomfort during the expansion process, please stop turning the appliance until you consult with our office.
Please remember to brush your teeth very thoroughly, especially around the molar attachments of your appliance; at least two-to-three times a day and use a mouth rinse, such as Oral B with Fluoride, for extra protection of the teeth and to help keep the expansion appliance clean.
